Monday’s Cup of Motivation

Monday's Cup of Motivation

This is the 300th Cup of Motivation.

These Cups of motivation focus on family, hope and time. If there’s one thing we have learned from these cups, then they are worth writing every weekend. If you have ever lost someone, you know how valuable time is and where the motivation comes for not wasting time. Every day is a gift. Let’s remind ourselves today that we can do anything we put our mind to. That is what we are told as children. As we grow older, that inner voice is drowned out by everyone telling us what we can’t do. The truth is we are the person who sets the limits on how far we go in life. We are the one person who needs to believe in ourselves no matter what the rest of the world says. The best advice we will ever get comes from that inner voice when nobody else is around. It is telling us we can do this if we keep believing in ourselves. If success was easy, then everyone would be successful. This week, let’s remember that we are unique and a gift from God. Let’s not waste that gift by simply getting through life. Let’s live the life we dream of. No matter where we are at today, there is still time if we start now. Better to try and fail than to not and regret. It’s scary getting out of our comfort zone but that’s where we need to go if we are going to grow. Let’s make the most out of the time we have. Here’s to the next 300 Cups of Motivation and here’s to making it a phenomenal week!!

As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.

Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.

Sometimes life is great and sometimes it’s not so great. This is a universal truth. There’s always events coming up and we tell ourselves that once we can get past that event, we can get back to life. The truth is these events are a part of life and they have a huge impact on our quality of life. How we respond to events will have a profound effect on how we live our lives. There are different ways to react to challenging events. Do we float with the tide or do we swim for a goal? That’s the question. We can bury our head in the sand and hope life works itself out or we act and face it head on today and make it work out the way we want it to. Life is all about the choices we make. There is a simple formula that we can apply to all the events in our lives and how we choose to respond. We can actively use this on a daily basis. E+R=O. Event plus Response equals Outcome. Many of us blame outside events for where we are in life. We blame our job, our spouse, the economy, the weather… The truth is we are a direct result of every choice we have made in the past. We need to take ownership of everything in our lives and realize that it is up to us to make it happen. We can’t change the events but we can change how we respond to them in order to get a better outcome. Events don’t determine where we are in life. How we respond to them does. Let’s be positive and take ownership of how we respond to events. It’s never too late to change our attitude. Remember that Thoughts Become Things. This week, let’s think positive and make it happen. Have a phenomenal week!!

The Worry Tree!
The Carpenter I hired to help me restore and old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence.

On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.

Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.

“Oh, that’s my trouble tree”, he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing for sure, troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again.”

“Funny thing is”, he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick ’em up, there ain’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”

It doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full. Be thankful that you have a glass and grateful that there’s something in it.

So if you now number yourself among the disenchanted, then you have no choice but to accept things as they are, or to seriously seek something else. But beware of looking for goals: look for a way of life. Decide how you want to live and then see what you can do to make a living WITHIN that way of life. But you say, “I don’t know where to look; I don’t know what to look for.” And there’s the crux. Is it worth giving up what I have to look for something better? I don’t know — is it? Who can make that decision but you? But even by DECIDING TO LOOK, you go a long way toward making the choice.
